Janet M. Gorman

February 17, 1917 - March 30, 2014

COOPERSTOWN -Janet M. (Remondelli) Gorman, an exemplary American who was loved by many, died peacefully at her home at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home on Sunday evening, March 30, 2014. She was 97.

Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, she entered this life on February 17, 1917, the daughter of Peter and Amelia (Amadeo) Remondelli. After graduating from high school, she attended nursing school at Newark Memorial Hospital and trained as a surgical nurse. Just prior to World War II, Janet enlisted in the United States Army Nurse Corps on April 17, 1941, and was assigned to Fort Hancock, New Jersey. Following the destruction of Pearl Harbor, Janet trained newly recruited Army nurses to serve as surgical nurses in the Pacific Theater. Captain Remondelli served in the Pacific Theater as a surgical nurse and operating room supervisor for the duration of the war.

While serving in the Pacific, Janet met her future husband, USAF Lt. Col. Leo F. Gorman. They were married in 1946 and remained so until Leo's death on November 16, 1965. The Gormans raised three children.

As her family became established, Janet returned to nursing and served as nursing supervisor at Central General Hospital in Plainview, NY for many years.

Upon her retirement, Janet moved first to East Orange, NJ, and then to Cooperstown. She was a member of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Roman Catholic Church, the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown, the Cooperstown Women's Club, and the Clark Sports Center Senior Bridge Club. Janet enjoyed playing golf, working on the Bereavement Committee at St. Mary's Church, volunteering for Bassett Hospital by making and donating baby blankets, and playing bridge with several different groups.

Janet will be remembered by her family and many friends as a fun, generous, and well-organized individual (she was a take charge kind of gal!).

Janet is survived by her children, daughter Nancy Iversen and her husband, Robert W. Iversen, daughter Teresa Gorman, and son Raymond Gorman and his wife Rhonda Gorman. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christopher Iversen and his fiance, Lisa Mitten, Timothy Iversen, Cody Gorman and Taylor Gorman. In addition, Janet is survived by her great grandchildren, Lucia Berliner and her mother, Susan Berliner, Robert G. Iversen and Mary Iversen and their mother, Tamara Iversen; and several nieces and nephews, Amelia Gardner and her husband, Charles Gardner, Margaret Koryda, Martha McAlister and her husband Daniel McAlister, Anthony Simonelli and his wife Diane and the many children and grandchildren of her nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call to pay their respects at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 2-5 PM on Thursday, April 3, 2014.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 PM on Friday, April 4, 2014 at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating.
