Frances K. Raeder

1929 - 2023

COOPERSTOWN – Frances K. “Fran” Raeder, 94, of Cooperstown, passed away Sunday night, October 22, 2023, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

She was born October 12, 1929, in Brooklyn, a daughter of Joseph and Mary (Tecza) Kurdziel.

For many years Fran worked as an interior designer for Benjamin Moore in Hackensack, New Jersey. During her time there she handled many assignments, including choosing names for new paint colors and “colorizing” the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois.

It was during her years with Benjamin Moore that she met Paul Beckwith Raeder, vice president of their eastern division. Fran and Paul were married October 11, 1980 in Harrington Park, New Jersey.

In 1990, not long after retiring from their careers with Benjamin Moore, Fran and Paul moved to Cooperstown. Paul grew up in Grand Gorge, so he was happy to be near his childhood home. Fran, a New York native, had more modest aspirations. She was quoted in a Friends of Bassett newsletter, “I wanted to live in a small town and I wanted to own a Victorian home. I was thrilled to find all that I’d hoped for in Cooperstown.” And Cooperstown was pleased to have her as well!

Upon moving to Cooperstown both Fran and Paul quickly immersed themselves in the community. They volunteered at Bassett Medical Center, St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church, and the Baseball Hall of Fame. They were also long-time supporters and active members of The Farmer’s Museum and the Fenimore Art Museum.

Throughout her life, Fran traveled extensively to all corners of the world, including her many trips to Poland to visit relatives. She loved all kinds of animals and shared her life with multiple dogs over the years. Fran was an avid reader and was known to share “the good ones” with her family and friends. She treated her nieces and nephews like they were her own children, providing love, guidance, and support throughout her life. She was always the “cool aunt” – taking them on adventures they would not have experienced otherwise, such as sightseeing in New York City via limo, a river trip to Russia, and more. She was 94 years young; still vibrant and smart as a whip. She will be very missed!

The family is extremely grateful for the excellent care that Fran received from the Basset nurses, doctors and staff.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 26 years, Paul B. Raeder, who died March 27, 2007; a sister, Stella Lewandowski and husband, Joseph; and a brother, Edward Kurdziel and his wives, Arlette Spinney and Joan Sierakowski.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews.

Fran’s family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2024, at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church, 31 Elm Street, Cooperstown.

Immediately following the visitation, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the church with Fr. Michael Cambi, pastor officiating. Following the Mass, all are invited to the Parish Hall located directly behind the church for a time of fellowship and refreshment.

Fran will be privately laid to rest near Paul in Fairview Cemetery in Grand Gorge.

In lieu of flowers, Fran’s family respectfully requests that memorial donations in her memory be directed to Angel Network of Cooperstown, Attn: Matt Monahan, PO Box 1186, Cooperstown, NY  13326 or Susquehanna SPCA, 5082-5088 State Highway 28, PO Box 267, Cooperstown, NY  13326.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Dolores M. Galluba

1945 - 2023

COOPERSTOWN – Dolores “Dede” M. Galluba, 78, of Cooperstown, a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died of lung cancer on November 8, 2023. She passed away peacefully at her home with her daughters by her side.

Dolores is survived by her two daughters, Gail (David) DeNicola and Sharon Caturano; brother Robert (Jennifer) LeTellier; sister-in-law, Betty Lou Eccles; and grandchildren Bryan, Steven, Kristyn, and Sarah and great granddaughter Harper. She was predeceased by her husband, William; sister, Eileen Bartlett; and brother-in-law, Thomas Eccles.

Dolores Marion LeTellier was born in Northern Ireland on October 9, 1945, to Robert Walker LeTellier and Mabel Jane (Managh) at the Gortmore Nursing Home in Omagh, County Tyrone.

She grew up in Sea Cliff and graduated from North Shore High School. Upon graduation she met the love of her life, William “Billy” Galluba. They married on July 2, 1966, in Aiken County, South Carolina while he was in the United States Army. They shared their love of traveling by spending winters in Hawaii and Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Over the years they went on twenty-one cruises together. They were happiest enjoying endless hours on the beach or by the pool. They were married for 55 years.

Dolores attended secretarial school after high school graduation and later on graduated from the Brittany Beauty Academy. For many years, Dede was employed as a hairdresser at the House of Capelli in Glen Cove. Later she worked as a florist in the family floral business. After moving to Cooperstown, she worked until retirement at The Otesaga Hotel as a hostess. Induction Weekend was the highlight of the year for her because she got to personally know the Hall of Fame players and their families. She looked forward to their return each year.

Dede and Billy raised their daughters in West Islip, Long Island and from there moved to Walton. They loved the Catskill Mountains and together built their vacation home overlooking the Pepacton Reservoir which they enjoyed for many years. They built their final home together in Cooperstown and lived there for over twenty years.

Dede’s greatest joy in life was being a grandmother and great grandmother. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, holidays and vacations with her family were her greatest love. The simplest pleasures in life brought her happiness: traveling, Turning Stone Casino, sunny days, and everything about Christmas. A friend recently stated, “A day without Dede is like a day without sunshine.” She was deeply loved and will be terribly missed.

Dede will be lovingly remembered at a memorial gathering for family and friends which will take place in the spring of 2024.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Julianne Sharratt

1957 - 2023

HARTWICK – Julianne (Juli) Sharratt, 65, who owned Beaver Valley Campground with her late husband, Dwaine, and their children, passed away Friday night, November 3, 2023, at her home in the Town of Hartwick following an unexpected diagnosis of cancer in July 2023.

Born December 11, 1957, in Webster, Massachusetts, Juli was the daughter of Julian Paul (“Peewee”) Kaczynski and Rosemarie (Neeser) Kaczynski. She spent her early years in her father’s barber shop, flying to Florida in his plane, and going to “too many rock concerts.” After high school, she moved across the country to California. It was by serendipity that she met her future husband, Dwaine, on Whidbey Island in Washington State, where she asked this young guy from Minnesota for a ride to Massachusetts and he surprisingly said yes. They arrived there in the summer of 1980 and Juli and Dwaine married in August 1983.

After searching for the perfect place to raise their family, the couple drove through Cooperstown during Winter Carnival and fell in love with the village. In 1988, the family purchased Beaver Valley Campground, moving from Thompson, Connecticut to their own “piece of paradise.” They worked tirelessly to create a special place for their family and guests to play, dream, and grow. Early campers remember Friday night dances, hayrides, candy bar bingo, haunted houses, Sunday pancake breakfasts, bonfires, clown shows, and many children’s camps with various themes. In 1991, they started Cooperstown Baseball Camp and hosted the Legends of Baseball after building their own “Field of Dreams.” Juli and Dwaine hosted countless fundraisers for neighbors and friends and hosted community events. Juli was described by friends as generous, strong, loving, and “a shining light.”

Juli leaves her four children, Nathan Sharratt and wife, Mona Collentine of Marietta, Georgia, Caley Sharratt and husband, Tristan (Davis-Fralick) Sharratt, Jamie (Sharratt) Dobrovolc and wife, Allison Dobrovolc, and Nicholas Sharratt, all of Hartwick; and her cherished grandchildren, Elsie, Westley and Wren. She is survived by her Massachusetts family, brother-in-law, Steve, nephew Jason and niece Michelle, cousins, Maryann Otto and Nathalie Champagne, and Aunt Teresa Arter, as well as many members of her chosen Minnesota family. Many dear friends who deeply cared for Juli have been supporting her children during this loss. Juli’s husband of 39 years, Dwaine, passed in November 2022, her father, Peewee in 2014 and her mother, Rosemarie in 2012.

Family and friends may call and pay their respects from 4-6 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2023, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut Street, Cooperstown.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 11, 2023, at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church, 31 Elm Street, Cooperstown, with Fr. Michael Cambi, pastor, officiating.

Interment will be at a later date in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Angel Network of Cooperstown, Attn: Matt Monahan, PO Box 1186, Cooperstown, NY  13326.
