James A. McGrath

1938 - 2023

COOPERSTOWN – James Anthony McGrath, a long-time resident of Cooperstown and dedicated member of the Cooperstown Veterans Club passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of Thursday, December 21, 2023, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta. He was 85 years old.

Born May 21, 1938, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Jim was one of eight children of John Thomas McGrath and Sophie R. (Maciag) McGrath. When he was 10 years old, Jim’s father passed away unexpectedly, and soon after the family moved to Hartwick. Jim attended school there and graduated with the Class of 1957, which was the last class to graduate from Hartwick High School.

On February 13, 1958, Jim was inducted into the United States Air Force, and proudly served his country with the 4616th Air Base Squadron. Initially assigned to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, he eventually went overseas. He served as an aerospace control and warning systems operator (AC&W) and throughout his tour of duty often passed between East and West Berlin. He received his Honorable Discharge from the Military on May 31, 1962, and returned home to Hartwick, after work experience in Germany and marriage to Christa Rietzne in 1961. The marriage ended in divorce in 1967.

On January 15, 1978, Jim married Janet Lee Hurlburt (whom he met on a blind date on January 15, 1971) in a ceremony at the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, and they settled into their home on Elm Street.

Throughout his life Jim was employed as a carpenter, first working with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and later on his own in the Cooperstown area.

Raised in the Roman Catholic faith, he enjoyed occasionally attending the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown with Jan.

Proud to be a military veteran, Jim was a faithful and dedicated member of the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 and the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown, and active in the Otsego/Delaware Counties VFW organization. He often served with the VFW honor guard for special events and funerals, and most especially enjoyed the camaraderie with his fellow veterans at the Cooperstown Veterans Club; the place will not be the same without Jim’s presence.

Jim is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jan, of Cooperstown; a son, Patrick J. McGrath of Medina and spouse Julianne; a daughter, Sabina Stegmuller and spouse Martin of Leipzig, Germany; and grandchildren Fabian and Vincent Stegmuller of Germany and Makenzie, Jackson, Charlotte and Emmalynn McGrath of Medina.

He is further survived by a brother, Frank McGrath (Ann) of Lyman, South Carolina; three sisters, Mary Margaret McGrath (David Kane) of Annapolis, Maryland, Helen Senmartin (George) of Belleville, New Jersey, and Ann Kane of Lititz, Pennsylvania; a sister-in-law, Grace McGrath of Florham Park, New Jersey; and their families. He is also survived by brothers-in-law John Jr (Iva), James (Roxana) and Joseph (Donna) Hurlburt, all of Otego, and their families. Jim’s first wife, Christa also survives.

In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph who died in infancy, John T. McGrath, Jr. who died November 16, 2008, and Thomas S. McGrath who died November 23, 2019. He is also predeceased by sister-in-law Janet McGrath (spouse of John) of Oneonta, brother-in-law, Jack Kane (spouse of Ann) of Pennsylvania, and parents-in-law, Jed and Jean Hurlburt of Otego.

Friends are invited to pay their respects to Jim’s family from 3 – 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2023, in the Fellowship Hall at The First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, 21 Elm Street, Cooperstown.

At 4 p.m. a memorial service will take place in the Fellowship Hall at the church, with Pastor Mike Coles officiating.

Military Honors will be rendered at the start of the service by members of the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579, the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128, and the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Elite Honor Guard.

Memorial donations may be directed to Wounded Warrior Project or a charity of one’s choice.

Deborah A. Kiser

FLY CREEK – Deborah A. Kiser, who will be fondly remembered for her years as an elementary school teacher with the Cooperstown Central School District, entered into eternal rest following a valiant battle with cancer Sunday morning, December 10, 2023, at her home in Fly Creek with family by her side. She was 68 years old.

Born in Goshen, Debbie was one of five children of Ralph Michael “Mickey” and Carma Marye (Perrego) Ryan, who passed in 2017 and 2009 respectively.

As a young child, Debbie and her family moved to Milford and lived on their family dairy farm on the Hinman Hollow Road. After graduating from Milford Central School with the Class of 1973, she attended SUNY Oneonta, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

On June 5, 1976, Debbie married the love of her life, Kenneth David Kiser, in a ceremony at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown.  Kenny, who was also a member of the Milford Central School Class of 1973, and Debbie shared twenty-nine fun-filled years together until his untimely passing November 1, 2005.

Debbie was one of those lucky people who found work right out of college. As a student teacher in 1976, she student-taught Don Howard’s eighth-grade social studies class, and was hired to teach at the Hartwick Grade Center that fall, which was also the last year that building served as a school. It was then that she came to teach with the Cooperstown Central School District, where she stayed until retiring in 2011. Debbie once stated, “teaching was my career and my hobby. It was my life.”

Throughout the years she taught several grade levels, including second grade, fifth and sixth grade language arts and fourth, fifth and sixth grade social studies. She especially enjoyed the different ages of the students she taught and was surrounded by, stating that they were all great in different ways. Teaching a unit and then seeing how students learned was always gratifying to her, and she enjoyed seeing the projects students created. Her favorite was the travel brochure project the fifth-graders created. When teaching the younger grades she loved the plays and the Friday morning get-togethers with Mr. Thorn playing the piano and all the students singing their hearts out with the music. She also appreciated the part of the school day where a book was read out loud; she felt the sharing of the story created such community within the room. Perhaps her favorite memento from her years of teaching was a quilt created for her one year by the second graders.

At various times in Debbie’s life, she overcame challenges, but always came out on the other side in a positive way. She once said, “As the song goes…there are always mountains to climb. Not every day is easy, but over a lifetime you only remember the good moments.”

Throughout her life, Debbie was a devoted and faithful communicant of St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown. She was also a member of the original Board of Directors of the Cooperstown Foundation for Excellence in Education.

Debbie is survived by her two sons, Christopher Ryan Kiser and wife, Melissa of Cortland and Michael Paul Kiser of Florida; a grandson, Bentley Kiser; and her siblings, Patrick Ryan and wife, Chris of Campbell Hall, Michael Ryan and wife, Chris of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, Sandra Strong and husband, Mike of Milford and Kelly Liner and husband, Tom of Milford, and their families.

In addition to her wonderful and supportive family, Debbie has been blessed with an amazing group of friends who also supported her through her journey with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Friday, December 15, 2023, at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. Michael Cambi, pastor officiating. She will be laid to rest alongside Kenny in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Debbie’s memory may be made to the Cooperstown Foundation for Excellence in Education to support the foundation’s growth, honor Debbie’s dedication to education and support the students’ enrichment at Cooperstown Central School. Checks may be made to “CFEE” with “In Debbie’s Memory” on the memo line, and mailed c/o Cooperstown Central School, 39 Linden Avenue, Cooperstown, NY  13326.

Jean Ballard

1927 - 2023

COOPERSTOWN – With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Jean Ballard, a cherished member of the Cooperstown community, who died on November 17, 2023, in Burlington, Vermont, surrounded by her loving family. She was 96. All who knew Jean were touched by her quick humor, lively spirit, and enormous heart.

She was born on June 2, 1927, in Duryea, Pennsylvania, to Rudolph and Anna (Kufta) Solarchik. After graduating from high school in 1945, Jean played a meaningful role during World War II, working in a silk mill that helped manufacture parachutes for American soldiers. It was there she met and fell in love with Joseph Bozosi, exchanging letters with him during the war while he was serving in the U.S. Navy. They married in 1948 in Cooperstown. Together, they worked at Sherry’s Tea Room and later co-established, operated, and managed the popular Otsego Diner for 15 years until Joseph’s passing. Jean devoted the next two decades to Bassett Hospital, contributing her skills as a phlebotomist in the hematology lab. She married Robert Ballard in 1981 and spent 19 happy years with him both in Cooperstown and in their condo in Deerfield Beach, Florida.

Jean had been an active member of the Cooperstown St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church since 1947 and found great comfort in her faith. A unique aspect of Jean’s spiritual life was her special relationship with St. Anthony. Countless times, she sought his intercession and found solace in his assistance, especially when things were lost. St. Anthony became a guide in times of need, exemplifying the profound connection between faith and everyday life. She passed her connection with St. Anthony on to her family, many of whom turn to Jean’s most beloved saint when things go missing. She was also an active participant in the Cooperstown Criterion Club and Cooperstown Native Daughters. She enjoyed dancing the polka, walking on the beach while wintering in Florida, cross-country skiing, golfing, playing cards, and was an avid reader with a fondness for romance novels. Jean loved to laugh and tell stories and could often be found entertaining friends and greeting passersby from her back porch on Beaver Street. In her later years, Jean moved to Burlington, Vermont. There, she found comfort and support in the care of her family. Jean’s last chapter was marked by warmth and love.

Jean was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Bozosi Sr.; second husband, Robert Ballard; parents, Rudolph and Anna (Kufta) Solarchik; sister, Dorothy Kashuda; brother-in-law, Joseph Wycallis; and special friend, Pete Cascio.

She is survived by her children, Joseph (Susan) Bozosi, Karen Bozosi (Douglas) Dailey, Stephen (Rhonda) Ballard, and Deborah Ballard; her brother Robert (Mary Winnie) Solarchik, sister Joan Wycallis, and brother-in-law Vince Kashuda; her loving grandchildren, Kenneth (Sarah) Phillips, Jonti (Tom) Rodi, Jacob (Diana Marinovic) Roesch, Benjamin (Shannon) Roesch, Sean (Michele) Dailey, James (Nancy Galante) Dailey, and Daniel (Annie Barker) Dailey; her great-grandchildren, Grace and Laura Phillips; Lucas, Oliver, Ellis, and Evelyn Rodi;
Felix and Leo Roesch; and Grayson and Finnegan Dailey; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

For the excellent care Jean has received, the family wishes to thank Gazebo Senior Living, Birchwood Terrace Memory Care, Bayada Hospice, and special thanks to Dr. Karen Sokol.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2024, at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church, 31 Elm Street, Cooperstown, with Fr. Michael Cambi, pastor, officiating. The Service of Committal and Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Index, where Jean will be laid to rest alongside her first husband, Joseph Bozosi, Sr. Immediately following the service at the cemetery, there will be a reception in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, located directly behind the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be directed to the Cooperstown Food Pantry, 25 Church Street, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Local arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Frances K. Raeder

1929 - 2023

COOPERSTOWN – Frances K. “Fran” Raeder, 94, of Cooperstown, passed away Sunday night, October 22, 2023, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

She was born October 12, 1929, in Brooklyn, a daughter of Joseph and Mary (Tecza) Kurdziel.

For many years Fran worked as an interior designer for Benjamin Moore in Hackensack, New Jersey. During her time there she handled many assignments, including choosing names for new paint colors and “colorizing” the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois.

It was during her years with Benjamin Moore that she met Paul Beckwith Raeder, vice president of their eastern division. Fran and Paul were married October 11, 1980 in Harrington Park, New Jersey.

In 1990, not long after retiring from their careers with Benjamin Moore, Fran and Paul moved to Cooperstown. Paul grew up in Grand Gorge, so he was happy to be near his childhood home. Fran, a New York native, had more modest aspirations. She was quoted in a Friends of Bassett newsletter, “I wanted to live in a small town and I wanted to own a Victorian home. I was thrilled to find all that I’d hoped for in Cooperstown.” And Cooperstown was pleased to have her as well!

Upon moving to Cooperstown both Fran and Paul quickly immersed themselves in the community. They volunteered at Bassett Medical Center, St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church, and the Baseball Hall of Fame. They were also long-time supporters and active members of The Farmer’s Museum and the Fenimore Art Museum.

Throughout her life, Fran traveled extensively to all corners of the world, including her many trips to Poland to visit relatives. She loved all kinds of animals and shared her life with multiple dogs over the years. Fran was an avid reader and was known to share “the good ones” with her family and friends. She treated her nieces and nephews like they were her own children, providing love, guidance, and support throughout her life. She was always the “cool aunt” – taking them on adventures they would not have experienced otherwise, such as sightseeing in New York City via limo, a river trip to Russia, and more. She was 94 years young; still vibrant and smart as a whip. She will be very missed!

The family is extremely grateful for the excellent care that Fran received from the Basset nurses, doctors and staff.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 26 years, Paul B. Raeder, who died March 27, 2007; a sister, Stella Lewandowski and husband, Joseph; and a brother, Edward Kurdziel and his wives, Arlette Spinney and Joan Sierakowski.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews.

Fran’s family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2024, at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church, 31 Elm Street, Cooperstown.

Immediately following the visitation, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the church with Fr. Michael Cambi, pastor officiating. Following the Mass, all are invited to the Parish Hall located directly behind the church for a time of fellowship and refreshment.

Fran will be privately laid to rest near Paul in Fairview Cemetery in Grand Gorge.

In lieu of flowers, Fran’s family respectfully requests that memorial donations in her memory be directed to Angel Network of Cooperstown, Attn: Matt Monahan, PO Box 1186, Cooperstown, NY  13326 or Susquehanna SPCA, 5082-5088 State Highway 28, PO Box 267, Cooperstown, NY  13326.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Dolores M. Galluba

1945 - 2023

COOPERSTOWN – Dolores “Dede” M. Galluba, 78, of Cooperstown, a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died of lung cancer on November 8, 2023. She passed away peacefully at her home with her daughters by her side.

Dolores is survived by her two daughters, Gail (David) DeNicola and Sharon Caturano; brother Robert (Jennifer) LeTellier; sister-in-law, Betty Lou Eccles; and grandchildren Bryan, Steven, Kristyn, and Sarah and great granddaughter Harper. She was predeceased by her husband, William; sister, Eileen Bartlett; and brother-in-law, Thomas Eccles.

Dolores Marion LeTellier was born in Northern Ireland on October 9, 1945, to Robert Walker LeTellier and Mabel Jane (Managh) at the Gortmore Nursing Home in Omagh, County Tyrone.

She grew up in Sea Cliff and graduated from North Shore High School. Upon graduation she met the love of her life, William “Billy” Galluba. They married on July 2, 1966, in Aiken County, South Carolina while he was in the United States Army. They shared their love of traveling by spending winters in Hawaii and Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Over the years they went on twenty-one cruises together. They were happiest enjoying endless hours on the beach or by the pool. They were married for 55 years.

Dolores attended secretarial school after high school graduation and later on graduated from the Brittany Beauty Academy. For many years, Dede was employed as a hairdresser at the House of Capelli in Glen Cove. Later she worked as a florist in the family floral business. After moving to Cooperstown, she worked until retirement at The Otesaga Hotel as a hostess. Induction Weekend was the highlight of the year for her because she got to personally know the Hall of Fame players and their families. She looked forward to their return each year.

Dede and Billy raised their daughters in West Islip, Long Island and from there moved to Walton. They loved the Catskill Mountains and together built their vacation home overlooking the Pepacton Reservoir which they enjoyed for many years. They built their final home together in Cooperstown and lived there for over twenty years.

Dede’s greatest joy in life was being a grandmother and great grandmother. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, holidays and vacations with her family were her greatest love. The simplest pleasures in life brought her happiness: traveling, Turning Stone Casino, sunny days, and everything about Christmas. A friend recently stated, “A day without Dede is like a day without sunshine.” She was deeply loved and will be terribly missed.

Dede will be lovingly remembered at a memorial gathering for family and friends which will take place in the spring of 2024.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Julianne Sharratt

1957 - 2023

HARTWICK – Julianne (Juli) Sharratt, 65, who owned Beaver Valley Campground with her late husband, Dwaine, and their children, passed away Friday night, November 3, 2023, at her home in the Town of Hartwick following an unexpected diagnosis of cancer in July 2023.

Born December 11, 1957, in Webster, Massachusetts, Juli was the daughter of Julian Paul (“Peewee”) Kaczynski and Rosemarie (Neeser) Kaczynski. She spent her early years in her father’s barber shop, flying to Florida in his plane, and going to “too many rock concerts.” After high school, she moved across the country to California. It was by serendipity that she met her future husband, Dwaine, on Whidbey Island in Washington State, where she asked this young guy from Minnesota for a ride to Massachusetts and he surprisingly said yes. They arrived there in the summer of 1980 and Juli and Dwaine married in August 1983.

After searching for the perfect place to raise their family, the couple drove through Cooperstown during Winter Carnival and fell in love with the village. In 1988, the family purchased Beaver Valley Campground, moving from Thompson, Connecticut to their own “piece of paradise.” They worked tirelessly to create a special place for their family and guests to play, dream, and grow. Early campers remember Friday night dances, hayrides, candy bar bingo, haunted houses, Sunday pancake breakfasts, bonfires, clown shows, and many children’s camps with various themes. In 1991, they started Cooperstown Baseball Camp and hosted the Legends of Baseball after building their own “Field of Dreams.” Juli and Dwaine hosted countless fundraisers for neighbors and friends and hosted community events. Juli was described by friends as generous, strong, loving, and “a shining light.”

Juli leaves her four children, Nathan Sharratt and wife, Mona Collentine of Marietta, Georgia, Caley Sharratt and husband, Tristan (Davis-Fralick) Sharratt, Jamie (Sharratt) Dobrovolc and wife, Allison Dobrovolc, and Nicholas Sharratt, all of Hartwick; and her cherished grandchildren, Elsie, Westley and Wren. She is survived by her Massachusetts family, brother-in-law, Steve, nephew Jason and niece Michelle, cousins, Maryann Otto and Nathalie Champagne, and Aunt Teresa Arter, as well as many members of her chosen Minnesota family. Many dear friends who deeply cared for Juli have been supporting her children during this loss. Juli’s husband of 39 years, Dwaine, passed in November 2022, her father, Peewee in 2014 and her mother, Rosemarie in 2012.

Family and friends may call and pay their respects from 4-6 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2023, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut Street, Cooperstown.

WILTON – Annie Welsh Bantham, a native of Cooperstown who most recently made her home in the Town of Wilton, passed away early Tuesday morning, October 3, 2023, at Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs. She was 90.

Annie was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend, and neighbor.  As a voracious reader, she spent most of her free time with a good book. She recently set a personal goal to read 100 books in the year, which she very nearly accomplished. She was also an avid bird-watcher, constantly observing and learning about the birds she encountered in her daily life. Annie was a kind and thoughtful person, and never had an unfriendly word to say about anyone. She loved her family and friends, and filled her home with warmth and kindness. She will be sorely missed.

Born May 11, 1933, in Cooperstown, Annie was a daughter of David Welsh, Sr. and Annie Dickson Welsh, both natives of Scotland. Raised in Cooperstown, Annie attended Cooperstown schools and graduated from Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1951.

She went on to work as a Customer Service Representative for the former Bell Telephone Systems in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Later she served for many years as an executive secretary for State Farm Insurance, retiring in 1993.

It was in Cooperstown that Annie met the love of her life, Clayton Harvey Bantham, Jr., who had lived in Cooperstown since 1936.  Married on April 9, 1955, they resided in West Milford, NJ for many years, later moving to Wilton, although they always called Cooperstown home. They wintered in Naples, FL.

During the years spent raising her three children and along with her husband she was active in the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts.

Annie is survived by her daughter, Shelley Fredericks and husband Mark of West Milford, NJ, two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel Bantham and wife Kimberly of Bedford, NH, and Timothy Bantham and wife Martina of Ballston Spa; grandchildren Leanne Fredericks, William Fredericks (Olivia), Douglas Fredericks, and Emily Caudill (Cameron), Amanda Ibanez (Zachary) and Chase Bantham, Ashe Sager (Claire), and Kevin Bantham; a sister-in-law, Roberta R. “Becky” Welsh of Bowerstown; two great-granddaughters, Indie and Quinn; and a niece and two nephews.

In addition to her mother and father who died in 1966 and 1969 respectively, she was predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, Harvey, in 2021; and her siblings, sister Grace Welsh and brothers Alistair, Robert, David, Jr., and Douglas J. Welsh.

The funeral service will be private and her remains will be laid to rest with Harvey in the Christ Church Ecumenical Columbarium in Cooperstown.

Wendell Tripp

1928 - 2023

COOPERSTOWN – Wendell Tripp passed away September 20, 2023.

He was born June 1, 1928, in Walden, the son of Eva Welsch Tripp and Wendell E. Tripp, Sr.  He graduated from Walden High School in June 1946 and joined the U.S. Navy the day after graduation.  He served in the Navy for three years, much of that time aboard the light cruisers USS Wilkes Barre and USS Huntington.

Following his discharge from the Navy, he attended Drew University, majoring in English Literature, and received the BA degree in 1953.  He then received the MA degree in American History from the University of Michigan and the Ph.D. from the Faculty of Political Science at Columbia University.

He taught world history at Port Jervis and Middletown high schools from 1955 to 1958  and taught American History at Hobart and William Smith Colleges from 1958 to 1964.  In 1964 he became director of publications and editor of the quarterly journal New York History at the New York State Historical Association in Cooperstown. Between 1964 and 2001 he edited 148 issues of the journal. He also produced The Otsego Herald, published annually for many years at The Farmers Museum print shop. He wrote The Church at the Farmers’ Museum and edited several publications related to the museums.

He was also the author or editor of several books:  Through Poverty’s Vail, published by Syracuse University Press; World of the Founders: New York Communities in the Federal Period, published by New York’s commission on the bicentennial of the U.S. constitution; A Bibliography of Newspapers in Fourteen New York Counties, co-edited with Sylvia Faibisoff,  published by the South Central Research Library Council; Coming and Becoming: Pluralism in New York State History, published by the NYSHA.  He also contributed, without portfolio, to a variety of publications, including The Empire State: A History of New York, published by Cornell University Press.

His Ph.D. dissertation, a study of Revolutionary War veteran Robert Troup, was published by Arno Press.  Troup, a close friend of both Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, was an active Federalist and a prominent attorney, but his major historic role was as chief administrator for Sir William Pulteney, an English peer who purchased millions of acres of land in western New York.  Troup’s lobbying in the New York legislature enabled Pulteney and other Englishmen to own land in New York.  He then established offices in several western New York communities and administered the sale of the Pulteney land to individual settlers.

In addition to being editor of New York History and Director of Publications for thirty-seven years, Tripp was also Director of Library Services for ten years and was Adjunct Professor in SUNY Oneonta’s Cooperstown Graduate Program for thirty-five years and Adjunct Lecturer in that Program for fifteen years.  He was also on the board of the South Central Library Council and represented NYSHA on the planning committee of the annual Conference on New York History.

His interest in history and in drama led him to write a play, “The Tragedy of Stephen Arnold,” which was presented at the Fenimore House theater, and to write two plays directed to elementary school audiences that were published in The Grade Teacher.

He was also active in local government, serving for several years on various zoning boards and serving for six years on the Cooperstown Board of  Trustees and for six years as mayor of Cooperstown.

Wendell was predeceased by his parents, by his brother Albert Tripp, sisters Marion Welsch and Mary Louise Meier, and by his wife Maria K. Tripp.

He is survived by daughters Dana Peeters (Martin) and Nancy Morris (Daniel); son Robert Tripp (Angela); by stepsons Robert Zamelis (Cristan) and Douglas Zamelis (Cheryl).  He is also survived by grandchildren Stefanie Brindle (Kyllan), MariaRosa Konopka (Robert V.), Andrew Konopka, Olivia Morris, Leland Morris, John Tripp, Samantha Tripp, Madelyn Zamelis, Ariadne Wright (Alex), and Nicholas Zamelis (Laura); great-grandchildren Carmella, Tolba and Aoife Brindle, Giuliana Konopka, and Vivianne Konopka.

Mike Burgess

Mike Burgess passed away on September 10 at the age of 69. If you didn’t know him, he was that guy with the easy smile and friendly demeanor. If you did know him, you knew he had abundant stories, looked you in the eye when speaking to you, and would lend a hand any time you needed it.

He had deep roots in this region, growing up in Hartwick, moving away only briefly for a little bit of military service, a little bit of college, and then to live with his wife Karen in her hometown in Long Island before they settled in Hartwick permanently in 1983. They made the red house by the creek a wonderful home for their family over the next 40 years. He was a man with a slew of practical skills and wide experiential knowledge. Over the years, he lent his carpentry skills to many buildings and homes in the area as a freelance carpenter or as part of the union. After retirement, you could often find him in his woodshop, and he would always welcome you in for a chat over a beer. He adored his labradoodles Bert and Murphy and loved nothing more than a glass of bourbon by a big bonfire, dogs by his side. Well, maybe bad sci-fi films and dime novels, which he voraciously consumed. He greeted everyone on the street with a hello or a wave, whether he knew them or not, whether driving down County Route 11 in Hartwick or riding the crosstown bus in Manhattan (much to the confusion and/or delight of New York City bus riders).

He is survived by his three daughters and their spouses, Heather and Justin, Rebecca and John, and Kari and Jeff; his grandchildren Noah, Jasiah, and Amelia; his mother-in-law Barbara, his sister-in-law Debra, and his brother-in-law Stephen; his nieces and nephews Jennifer, Joshua, Stephen, Jackie, Erica, Gene, and Joey, and their children and their families who fondly remember “Uncle Muck.” He was predeceased by his wife Karen, his mother Sieglind, his father Lynn, his brother Frederic, and his father-in-law Eugene. His legacy of hard work, loyalty, and respect for others will continue with those he leaves behind.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, September 30, from 5–7 pm at Connell Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home at 82 Chestnut Street, Cooperstown, NY.  In lieu of flowers, please donate to Susquehanna SPCA, the ASPCA, or a local animal rescue organization of your choice.

She was born March 8, 1933, in Oneonta, the first daughter of Jesse E. and Elsie (Weldon) Robinson of New Lisbon.

In her teen years her family moved to Cooperstown, where they resided in her grandparents', Frank and Gracie Robinson’s riverside home, the “Elmhurst” in Phoenix Mills where they ran a lumber mill. Joan attended Cooperstown High School, later (in life) earning her GED in order to attain her broker certification.

On October 29, 1950, Joan married Robert Charles Butler, a native of Cooperstown, in a ceremony at Christ Church in Cooperstown.

They first lived in Hyde Park in a humble home built by her husband. Then, in 1989, Joan and Bob moved to a home and property on Reiss Road in Pierstown they named “Fox Run.”

Much like her late husband, Joan had a passion and knack for finance. After serving as a teller at Key Bank she quickly became the branch manager in the 1970s. After her tenure at Key Bank, she earned her broker certification and for decades was an investment counselor, first for John Hancock, and then RBC Wealth Management in Cooperstown, assisted by her sister, Dorothy. Joan retired in her late 70s.

Joan was a long-time member of Otsego-Hartwick-Arbutus Chapter No. 201, Order of the Eastern Star, and in 2016 she was presented with her 50-year membership pin at the annual Otsego-Schoharie District Officer’s Visitation at the Cooperstown Masonic Temple. Even after her husband, Bob, passed away, she remained dedicated to the Masonic Fraternity, often attending Otsego Lodge No. 138, Free and Accepted Mason’s Honored Guest Nights.

For many years Joan also served as a member of the Board of Directors of Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown. In 2018, she received a certificate from the Lakewood Cemetery Association designating her “trustee emeritus” for her years of service as the association’s treasurer.

Joan will forever be remembered for her strong-mindedness, determination, drive for perfection and independence.

Her family would like to thank the staff at Woodside Hall for their caring and loving spirit, her lifelong friends Laura (Michael) Page for their companionship and assistance and Helios Care for making her comfortable in her final weeks.

In her younger years, Joan served on the Board of Directors at the Susquehanna SPCA assisting in the construction of the Hartwick Seminary facility. Joan loved her cats throughout the years and her last cat, Jezebel brought her much comfort. “Jezzy” was a feral cat who found a warm and loving home with Joan.
