Jean A. Kennedy

September 10, 1938 - June 28, 2014

HARTWICK - Jean A. Kennedy, 75, of Cooperstown, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family Saturday afternoon, June 28, 2014.

She was born September 10, 1938, at The Methodist Hospital of Brooklyn, a daughter of Stanislaus C. and Ethel A. (Smith) Kennedy, who were both natives of Newfoundland.

Jean was raised in the Prospect Park area of Brooklyn and attended Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church. At the age of 10, she and her family moved to Manhattan.

For many years, the family owned a camp and cottage in Nashua, New Hampshire, and when Jean was a teenager, the family moved there permanently in order that her father might return to working in the fishing industry, a family trade.

After graduating from Nashua High School in 1956, Jean went to work for a local attorney, and then married John P. Briggs.

After living for a time on Long Island, Jean and John and their family moved to the Cooperstown area to her husband's family property, where they established Cooperstown Family Campground on Petkewec Road.

Jean later developed a desire to work outside of the home and became a social services investigator and Resource Unit Supervisor for the Otsego County Department of Social Services. Always interested in furthering her education, she began taking classes in 1999 at Herkimer County Community College, and after nine years earned an associate's degree in business administration. During this time period she also took several courses at Utica College.

A faithful Roman Catholic, Jean was a communicant of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Through the years, she enjoyed playing hand bells, and was a member of the Buckingham Ringers, the adult hand bell choir at First United Methodist Church in Oneonta.  

Jean is survived by her one son, Christopher Briggs and his wife, Tamara, of Hartwick, and their children, Caitlin, Noah, Joshua and Andrew; her one daughter, Anita Briggs Jones and her husband, Lyle "Butch" Jones, of Hartwick; one brother, James J. Kennedy of New York City; one sister, Mary P. O'Neill of Nashua, New Hampshire; and a niece, nephew, and cousin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, William C. Kennedy and Fr. Stanley T. Kennedy.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Sunday, July 6, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. when Jean's family will be in attendance.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2014 at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating. The Service of Committal and Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Index.

Stanley G. Clark

November 2, 1922 - June 26, 2014

HARTWICK - Mr. Stanley G. Clark, 91, of Weeks Road in Hartwick, died Thursday morning, June 26, 2014, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

He was born November 2, 1922, in Hartwick, a son of  Harry and Bernice (Turner) Clark. Raised in Hartwick, he graduated from Hartwick High School with the Class of 1942.

On December 23, 1942, Stan was inducted into the United States Army Air Force and on January 1, 1943, entered into active service. He served as an airplane and engine mechanic with the 422nd Night Fighter Squadron and was involved with battles and campaigns in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland. Sgt. Clark received his honorable discharge from the military on October 5, 1945.  

Stan returned to his native Hartwick and on March 5, 1946, he married Lolita V. Mead in a ceremony at the First Methodist Church of Oneonta.  

For a time he worked as a mechanic at Ford Risley's Garage in Hartwick and also maintained the family farm. A skilled carpenter, he began working for Carpenters' Local # 277 out of Oneonta and worked on many projects throughout the northeast, including New York City and  Connecticut. In the 1960s Stan was involved with bridge work on I-88 and he and his family moved to Baltimore, MD while he was working on projects at Johns Hopkins University and the Civic Center. When the Baltimore Riot broke out in April of 1968, Stan quickly moved his family back to Hartwick where they have since made their home.

Stan was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, the Hartwick United Methodist Church, the Milford American Legion Post No. 1566, and was a charter member of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown.  

Stan is survived by four daughters, Terrie McPhail of Youngsville, North Carolina, Lynette M. Dibble of Hartwick, Coleen Vesely and her husband, Michael, of Springfield Center, and Shiela Shaul and her partner, Frank Parshall, of Hartwick; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. He is further survived by two brothers, Ellis Clark and his wife Elaine of Oneida Castle and Stephen Clark and his wife Carol of Macedon; one sister, Gwendolyn Dutcher of Milford; and many nieces and nephews. He will be especially missed by his special four-legged companion, Silas.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Lolita, who died July 13, 2002, a son-in-law, Kenneth McPhail, who died August 26, 2007 and one brother, Louis Clark who died June 26, 2012.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 from 7-9 p.m. when Stan's family will be in attendance.  

A funeral service will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at the Hartwick United Methodist Church with Rev. Fred Albrecht, officiating. Burial will follow in Hartwick Cemetery with military honors accorded by local veterans and the New York State Military Forces Honor Guard.

Robert J. Hickey

August 20, 1938 - June 26, 2014

COOPERSTOWN - Robert J. (Bob) Hickey, of Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, and Cooperstown, passed away Thursday morning, June 26, 2014 in Cooperstown after a short battle with cancer.

Bob was born August 20, 1938, in Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, to the late Edmund B. and Yvonne B. Hickey of Vineyard Haven. He graduated from Tisbury High School in 1957.

For a time he was employed by homebuilder Roger Engley prior to joining the United States Air Force in April 1958. He was trained as an airborne electronic warfare technician flying highly classified missions in the RC-135 aircraft. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he amassed over 5,000 flying hours, 3,500 of them in the combat zone. In addition to highly technical equipment service schools, he attended water survival, arctic survival in Alaska, jungle survival in the Philippines and POW camp training in Reno, Nevada and Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington State. He was the recipient of numerous awards including 18 Air Medals and the Vietnam Service Medal with 8 bronze stars. Upon retirement from active duty as a Master Sergeant after 23 years, he worked for MCI Telecommunications as a field engineer installing microwave equipment throughout the northeast for nine years. In 1992, Bob and his son, Bobby, opened the Cooperstown Fun Park and he continued to be active in operations for the past 23 years.

Growing up on the Vineyard, Bob was a paperboy for the New Bedford Standard Times for several years. He was also an accomplished horseman and rider for the Roland Chase Stables and won many first place horsemanship awards at the West Tisbury Fair. Bob also owned horses and was often seen riding through the back roads near his home at Tashmoo Pond. He loved fishing for striped bass and bluefish and was a participant in many of the bass derbies on Martha's Vineyard. He divided his time between Martha's Vineyard  and Cooperstown whenever possible and loved visiting the island and fishing from his boat. He enjoyed visiting with his many island friends. A jokester, he always loved a good story. He was always ready to help others and loved his family and friends and truly enjoyed their company.  

Bob is survived by two sons and one daughter: son, Michael Hickey and wife, Susan, with their children Joshua, David, Benjamin and Sarah of San Diego, California; daughter Marie Hoag and son Johnny and daughter Piper of Chico, California; and son Bobby Hickey and wife, Kelli, with son Bobby and step son, Michael, of Utica. He is further survived by one brother, Edmund, and wife, Trudy, of Oak Harbor, Washington, with their sons, Dan, Dave and Bill, and their wives and children.  

Calling hours will be held at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut Street, Cooperstown, on Monday, June 30, 2014, from 5-7 p.m.  Military Honors will be accorded by members of the Cooperstown American Legion and VFW and the Stratton Air National Guard United States Air Force Base Honor Guard from the 109th Airlift Wing.  

A Memorial Service and burial will take place at a later date on Martha's Vineyard.

Donald E. Hovey

January 23, 1929 - June 23, 2014

COOPERSTOWN - In the early morning hours of Monday, June 23, 2014, Dr. Donald E. Hovey, Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.), passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully at his home in Cooperstown. He was 85.

Born in Glendale, California, on January 23, 1929, he was a son of Helen Adelaide Wright and Harrold Kibbee Hovey.

Donald and his beloved wife, Wenona (also known as Wynn) were married in Cortland in 1951. Donald's career in the United States Air Force led the family to live in locations as diverse as Mountain Home, Idaho, New York City, and Tokyo. After serving with the Air Force for 20 years, Lieutenant Colonel Hovey retired in 1970. A graduate of UCLA, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado, and later embarked on a career as a professor of management at Youngstown State University in Ohio.  

After moving to Cooperstown, Dr. Hovey and his wife owned and operated the Wynterholm Bed and Breakfast located in a 17-room Gilded Age mansion on Chestnut Street in Cooperstown. After selling Wynterholm, the Hoveys divided their time between the Yacht and Tennis Club of St. Pete Beach, Florida, and their summer cottage in Otsego County on Goodyear Lake. Dr. Hovey relocated to Cooperstown after the passing of his wife Wenona in 2010.

Donald's pride and joy were his beloved children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Gregg and Leslie Hovey of San Diego, California, and daughters, Kate and Ashley; Kate's children with her husband, Charles Wheeler Coberly, Charlotte (Charlie) and Charles (Wheels); Rebecca and Rod Francis of Putney, Vermont, and sons, Daniel (Herrera) and Lachlan; Hal and Susan Hovey of Whidbey Island, Washington, and sons, Shane and Skyler; Nancy and Todd Schmidt of Lake Katrine, and daughters, Megan and Elizabeth Rose; and James Hovey and his partner, Claude Furones, of Portlandville; and previously deceased David Robert Hovey and Anne Elizabeth Hovey.

Donald is further survived by his four sisters-in-law: Viola Fiumera and her husband, Charles, of Boynton Beach, Florida, and Walton, Althea Gennarino and her husband, Lawrence, of Oneonta, Virginia Beecher of Utica, and Carol Brown and her husband, Charles, of Sodus Point and The Villages, Florida; his brother, Richard Hovey and his wife, Gloria, of Palm Desert, California; and many nieces and nephews. 

To everyone who knew him he exemplified a true officer and a gentleman.

In fulfillment of Dr. Hovey's desire to have his body donated for medical education and research, he has been gratefully received by the SUNY Upstate Medical University Anatomical Gift Program in Syracuse.  

Visiting hours for Dr. Hovey are scheduled for Saturday, August 9, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown. He will eventually be laid to rest with Military Honors in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown at a date to be announced in the near future.

As an alternative to flowers, Donald's family suggests that expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts be made to the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center Fund, c/o Friends of Bassett, One Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY  13326 or to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. William T. Armstrong

July 31, 1924 - June 18, 2014

COOPERSTOWN - William T. "Bill" Armstrong, a long-time resident of Cooperstown, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.  

A native of Springfield Center, he was born there July 31, 1924, a son of William J. and Beatrice (Kelly) Armstrong.  

After graduating from Springfield High School, Bill enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country during World War II in artillery operations and as a radio operator. Bill rarely talked about his combat experience; however his Army record and medals reflect his active participation in three major battles in North Africa and Italy.    

On July 31, 1948, Bill married Ellen Margaret Kelly in Little Falls. They soon made their home in Cooperstown, and for over 50 years have resided on Susquehanna Avenue where they enjoyed raising their large family.    

After the war, Bill was hired by New York Telephone. A meticulous and expert craftsman, Bill worked his way through the ranks, eventually overseeing many local telephone company offices in this area. In his retirement, he worked for over 15 summer seasons at the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown. An avid golfer and golf ball hunter, he truly loved this job, and made many friends during his years at the course.

A terrific amateur athlete, Bill enjoyed participating in many sports. He pitched and played center field for the Cooperstown Indians, was an avid bowler until he was in his eighties and was a member at the Leatherstocking Golf Course for decades. A skilled woodworker, he was also a master gardener who enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labors with family, friends and  neighbors.

Bill was a devout Catholic and communicant of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown and was past president of St. Mary's Holy Name Society. Bill lived a life of integrity and example, of which his family was extremely proud. He will be greatly missed.  

Bill is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ellen M. Armstrong, of Cooperstown: their children, Mark Armstrong and his wife, Mary, of Harrisville, New Hampshire, Maureen A. Parsons of Endicott, Andrew T. Armstrong of Allendale, New Jersey, Abigail M. Armstrong and her husband, Peter J. Farmer, of Lancaster, Massachusetts, Erin A. Cullings and her husband, Ned, of Castleton, and Mary Ann Armstrong and her partner, Angelika von Wahl, of Easton, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren, John Parsons  (Alysen), Megan Mercy (Brian), James Parsons (Jill), Emily, Bridget and Natalie Cullings, and Brian and Kevin Farmer; and four great grandchildren, Ella Parsons, Ronan Mercy and twins Cooper and Carter Parsons.

He is further survived by one brother, Tom Armstrong and his wife, Lillian, of Springfield; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Armstrong and Jeanette Armstrong, both of Springfield Center and Sheila Armstrong of Rome; and many nieces and nephews.  

Bill was preceded in death by his son, Peter G. Armstrong: three brothers, Eneas, Vincent and Clarence, and one sister, Marian.  

Visitation for family and friends will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 23, 2014 in the sanctuary of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be offered in the church at 12 Noon on Monday, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating.  

Immediately following the Mass, the Service of Committal and Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Index. Military Honors will be accorded by members of the Cooperstown VFW and Legion Posts and the New York State Military Forces Honor Guard.

Alberta A. Bowes

July 21, 1922 - June 16, 2014

COOPERSTOWN - Alberta Anna Bowes, a longtime resident of the Village of Cooperstown, retired Director of Nursing at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital and proud veteran of World War II, died Monday afternoon, June 16, 2014, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown. She was 91.

Born July 21, 1922, at Brady Maternity Hospital in Albany, she was the daughter of Thomas C. and Margaret (Dilts) Bowes. At the age of 6 months, Alberta and her family moved from Albany to Oneonta.

She attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Oneonta and graduated from Oneonta High School with the Class of 1938. In 1939 she entered St. Joseph's Hospital College of Nursing in Syracuse, graduating in May of 1943. In September of that same year she became licensed in New York State as a Registered Nurse and worked as a staff nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital. Then from January until October of 1944 she worked as a staff nurse at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

On October 2, 1944, Alberta entered into active duty with the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant and served her country during World War II as a general duty nurse in the Army Nurse Corps 25th Hospital Train. Assigned to the European Theater of Operations in December 1944, she shipped out to Cherbourg, France from Liverpool, England in January 1945. She was assigned to Hospital Train No. 19 which carried wounded from battle areas in France to hospital ships and rehabilitation centers in southern France. She also traveled throughout Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands, treating over 320 patients which included GIs, POWs, repatriated Allied Military personnel, as well as enemy POWs and children released from labor camps. The week after the concentration camp at Dachau was liberated, her unit visited the camp and treated survivors. While there she saw the ovens (some of which contained half cremated remains), the gas chambers and the laboratories where human experiments were carried out. In December 1945 she was reassigned from the hospital train to the American Hospital in Paris, France. On April 6, 1946, she was honorably discharged from the United States Army having attained the rank of First Lieutenant and received two Battle Stars for the Battle of Ardennes (the Battle of the Bulge) and the Battle of the Rhineland.

Following her time in the military, Alberta attended the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minnesota, graduating with honors in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing Education. In September she returned to Central New York and joined the faculty at Hartwick College in Oneonta as an instructor in the Nursing Department.

In 1954 she left Hartwick College and moved to Detroit, Michigan where she attended Wayne State University on a graduate teaching fellowship and received her Masters Degree in Nursing Education in June of 1956. In July of that year she moved to Cooperstown and came to work at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in the Nursing Administration Department. Dedicated to her profession, Alberta conducted a feasibility study and formulated an accepted associate degree program in nursing at the State University of New York Agricultural and Technical College at Delhi in the mid-1970s. In October 1972 she represented Bassett at the International Medical Education Conference in The Hague, Netherlands. After serving as the Director of Nursing for many years, she retired from Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital on July 30, 1982.

A passionate explorer, Alberta traveled extensively throughout the world, including visits to Russia, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Austria, the US Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Alaska, Nova Scotia, Iceland, Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Germany, Canada and Mexico and experienced passage through the Panama Canal. She also visited the Holy Land several times while her brother was there working for his company, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Corp. from 1973 through 1976.  

A member of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown, Alberta was also a life member of Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 and Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown. She was also a member of the alumni associations of Oneonta High School, St. Joseph's Hospital College of Nursing, the College of St. Teresa and Wayne State University, District 15 of New York State Nurses' Association (part of the American Nurses' Association), Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the American Region of Women in the Military, AARP, Elderhostel, Center for Continuing Adult Learning, Prime Time exercise group at Clark Sports Center, Cornell Cooperative Extension and the 4-H, serving as their money manager for several years at the Cooperstown office, Policy Committee for At Home Care in Oneonta and the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities of Delaware and Otsego Counties.

Since August of 2004 she resided at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown.  

Alberta is survived by her beloved brother, William Morris Bowes of Cooperstown, and several cousins.

A time for visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014, in the sanctuary of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be offered in the church at 11 a.m. on Friday, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating.

Judy S. Winnie

August 26, 1946 - June 15, 2014

FLY CREEK - Judy S. Winnie, 67, of Fly Creek, passed away after a long illness, Sunday morning, June 15, 2014, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

A native of Virginia, she was born August 26, 1946, in Petersburg, a daughter of the late Estel Edwin Stark and Ruth Estelle (Gee) Stark.  

On November 25, 1967, she married Harry Lee Winnie, Jr. whom she had met while he was serving in the military in Virginia. They soon moved to New York State and first resided in Toddsville, then later moved to Fly Creek and have since made their home on Feed Store Road.

After moving to the Cooperstown area, Judy was first employed for about five years at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. She was later employed at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital and retired after 23 years of service as a clerk in the ICU.

In her leisure, Judy often attended programs put on by the Fly Creek Grange and also attended the Fly Creek United Methodist Church. An avid reader, she enjoyed working at her computer as well as craft work involving baskets.

Judy is survived by her husband of 47 years, Harry, of Fly Creek; their son, Kevin Michael Winnie, who is currently serving in the United States Army and stationed in Germany with his wife, Donna, and her children; three sisters, Joyce Wilkerson and Sissie Cummins, both of Colonial Height, Virginia, and Karolen R. Flowers of Frankston, Texas; one brother, Dale Stark and his wife, Gloria, of Macon, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Audrey Lee Winnie of Fly Creek; and many nieces and nephews.    

A visitation and service will be announced and held in the near future.

FLY CREEK - Calling hours for Judy S. Winnie, 67, who died June 15, 2014, will be offered for family and friends at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut Street, Cooperstown, from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. A brief service will be offered at the end of the visitation, with the Rev. Betsy Jay, Chaplain at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Friends of Bassett for the benefit of the ICU, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY  13326, or the Fly Creek Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 218, Fly Creek, NY  13337.

Tommy Brown, Jr.

August 11, 1976 - June 1, 2014

HORSEHEADS - Tommy Brown, Jr., 37, of Erin, died Sunday afternoon, June 1, 2014, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown following a valiant struggle with lymphoma.

He was born August 11, 1976, at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, a son of Tommy Brown, Sr. and Rita (Greenwood) Brown Jacobs.

A licensed massage therapist, he had been employed at The Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley, PA and had recently opened his own practice in Endicott.

Tommy is survived by his beloved husband, Andrew Joseph Brown Robertshaw; his mother and step-father, Rita and Butch Jacobs; his father and step-mother, Tommy, Sr. and Maria Brown; his mother-in-law, Kelly Gable and father-in-law, Jack Robertshaw; his siblings Qiana Haley, James, Eric and Joshua Brown; step-brother, Chad and his wife Stephanie; step-sister, Kara; Kristen and Courtney Jacobs, and many nieces and nephews; and his grandmother Corrine Dais. He is further survived by aunts, uncles and cousins including, Cece and Ron Drew, Fred Greenwood, and James Hale.

He was predeceased by his grandfather, James Dais and step-brother Alex Gable.

A memorial and celebration of Tommy's life will be held from 4-8 PM on Friday, June 6, 2014, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 126 Main Street, Johnson City.
