Jon E. C. Cunningham

COOPERSTOWN – It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Jon Edwin Christen Cunningham. He died unexpectedly on August 7, 2026, from a hemorrhagic stroke, probably the result of hypertension and atherosclerosis.

Jon was born on Wednesday, June 16, 1965, in Cleveland, Ohio, the oldest of five children of Allan and Linda (Hall) Cunningham. His first six years were spent in Cleveland, Cooperstown, Sisseton, South Dakota and Lake Oswego, Oregon. He began first grade back in Cooperstown in September 1971. Jon was an honor student at Cooperstown Central School and graduated in 1983. He held a Clark Scholarship and, after some ups and downs, graduated in 1990 from Cornell University with a B.S. in biology.

From the time he was in 8th grade Jon’s passion was the guitar and rock music. It never brought the fame he was after, but he made records, developed a real skill in electronics, and acquired a host of friends. He held an extraordinary variety of jobs, too numerous to list, but in 2004 he co-authored Volume II of the Encyclopedia of Exploration with Carl Waldman. Over the years Jon courted a few ladies but never married - something he regretted. For the last ten years he has been a mainstay at the Fly Creek General Store and enjoyed engaging with customers. From all reports, the local residents looked forward to chatting and dealing with Jon.

Jon was a puzzle. He was kind and he had a tremendous capacity for friendship. At the same time, Jon had an abiding and unwholesome suspicion of public figures and public institutions, above and beyond the run of common opinion. We never understood why.

Jon is survived by his mother and father, Dr. Allan and Linda Cunningham of Bowerstown, and four siblings: Paul Cunningham and wife, Michelle, and their daughters Grace and Lucy of Glen Rock, New Jersey; Daniel Cunningham, who is currently serving with the Peace Corps in the Philippines, and his sons Stephen and Ethan; Elizabeth Barnard and her husband Joe of Tucson, Arizona and their children Mason and Madeline; and Andrew Cunningham of Bowerstown.

We miss Jon. He left us much too soon.

A service in celebration of Jon’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, with the Rev. Jessica Lambert officiating. Immediately following the service everyone is welcome to gather in the Chapel for refreshments and to remember Jon.

We thank Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home for their care and guidance.

Barbara Gloria Jorgensen Lamb

COOPERSTOWN – Barbara Lamb, a beautiful soul, a gracious woman, and lover of all creatures great and small, passed away in the early hours of June 19, 2026, in her home at Woodside Hall, with family by her side. She was 88.

"Barbara & Mr. Bear"

Born July 27, 1937, at St. Vincent’s Hospital on Staten Island, Barbara was the beloved daughter of Arthur and Rita (Cashman) Jorgensen. She graduated from the Staten Island Academy in 1955 and Lasell Junior College in 1957.

Barbara was deeply passionate about animals. Though she loved Staten Island, she also enjoyed living on the farm in Delhi where she rode horses and raised puppies. The family moved to Cooperstown in 1963 and for a time, lived at Woodside Hall. A litter of Barbara’s precious miniature Schnauzers was born in her closet there!

Barbara was known for her infectious giggle and the twinkle in her eye that hinted at her mischievous side. She began her career in real estate, and many recall the days when she used an RV to show houses so that clients could relax and take in the beautiful countryside. She later founded Lamb Realty, which she sold upon her retirement.

Barbara enjoyed fast cars and loved tooling around town in her red Toyota Land Cruiser or yellow Cadillac, rescuing animals along the way. She volunteered for the Susquehanna SPCA for many years and ran a dog grooming business for a time. Barbara’s home was a sanctuary for animals of all kinds, especially those most needing love.

Barbara married Charles Lamb in October 1978. Star-crossed lovers, who simply adored one another, they spent hours cruising Otsego Lake on their wooden boat, Lambcruiser, admiring nature and each other. Barbara and Charlie were married for 46 years until Charlie’s passing in 2024.  Testament to their abiding love and deep connection, Barbara and Charlie passed almost exactly the same time of day.

Barbara is survived by her family: step-daughter Susan Lamb and husband, Clif Buell of Apalachicola, Florida; step-son William Lamb, and wife Laura Bliss Lamb of Cooperstown; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Vickie Lamb; nieces Tricia (Michael) McElfresh and Lisa (Scott) Stuart; great nephew Casey McElfresh; and great nieces Ivy McElfresh, Anya Stuart, and Brynn Stuart, all of Clyde, Ohio. She is further survived by her loving family at Woodside Hall.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charlie, her parents, and her cherished menagerie of dogs, cats and birds.

Barbara was fortunate to spend her golden years back at Woodside Hall, where immense love, compassion, music, and laughter sustained her and brought true joy. Mary Cahill Reitz

COOPERSTOWN – Mary Cahill Reitz, 77, of Cooperstown, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, in Hingham, Massachusetts, surrounded by the love of her family and in the hands of God.

Born to Patrick and Margaret Cahill in New York City on December 23, 1948, Mary was a true New Yorker and proudly 100% Irish. She carried her heritage with joy throughout her life, sharing stories, traditions, and a deep love of family that became the center of her world. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Thomas and Lawrence Cahill. She is survived by her sisters, Patricia Holland, Anne Petralito, and Teresa Lively, with whom she shared a lifelong bond.

Mary was the devoted mother of Elizabeth Reitz, Katherine Anderson, and Mary Clare Roberts. Of all the roles Mary held throughout her life, none was more important to her than being a loving mother. She was a cherished mother-in-law to Alexander Schwall, Jeffrey Anderson, and Dean Roberts, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Mary is also survived by Kenneth Reitz, with whom she shared nearly forty years of marriage. She remained grateful for their love, friendship, and the family they built together.

Mary was brought immense happiness by her beloved grandchildren: Leonhard and Benjamin Schwall; Abigail, Lucy, and Henry Anderson; and Sammy Roberts. She delighted in celebrating their many accomplishments, encouraging their dreams, and reminding each of them how deeply they were loved and how special they are.

Mary graduated from Dominican Academy in Manhattan in 1966, an institution she held in high regard and where she formed friendships that lasted for six decades. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the College of Mount Saint Vincent in 1970 and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Cornell University in 1978, where she met her “sister” in nursing and life, Ronda Rosman. Mary was a dedicated nurse who brought tremendous compassion, intelligence, and kindness to countless patients and families.

Mary was also a talented artist whose creativity reflected the beauty she saw in the world around her. A lifelong lover of the ocean and sky, she treasured the summers she spent growing up at Breezy Point and carried that sense of peace and wonder with her, expressing it through her art. Mary was a devout Catholic whose faith remained a guiding force until the end of her life. She found great meaning in her many years of participation and leadership in women’s Bible studies, forming lasting friendships and continuing this work into her final chapter, which brought her a deep sense of purpose. She was known for her wise counsel, steady presence, and ability to find hope even in difficult circumstances.

Mary treasured her relationships with her many nieces and nephews, forming especially close bonds with several of them. Even during her final illness, Mary's focus remained on those she loved. In a sentiment that perfectly reflected her generous spirit, she expressed gratitude that her illness had brought her family together. That perspective—selfless, loving, and hopeful—was quintessentially Mary.

Her family will remember her for her strength, faith, humor, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. While her absence leaves an immeasurable void, the lessons she taught, the love she shared, and the example she set will continue to guide her children, grandchildren, family, and friends for generations to come. May she rest in the peace of Christ and in the loving embrace of those who have gone before her.

The family welcomes all who knew and loved Mary to join them in honoring and remembering her life.

Calling hours will be held at Connell, Dow, & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Friday, June 19th, from 4-6 PM.

John Francis “Jack” Smith

On the morning of St Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2026, John Francis “Jack” Smith peacefully passed into eternal rest at his Pine Boulevard home. His beloved wife, Gayle, and family were at his side. He was 95.

Born August 29, 1930, at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ, Jack was the fifth of nine children of Arthur James and Abbie Ellen (Ogden) Smith. Growing up in a large, close-knit family was a great influence on his life and honed the quick wit and sense of humor that he was known for throughout his long life. His sense of duty to family was also strongly forged at a young age. In 1953, tragedy struck and Jack became guardian of his three teenage sisters while he was on military deferment to attend college.

After graduating from Fordham University, with a B.S. in Labor Management, Jack worked for Hills Bros. as a coffee buyer, thus starting his life of travel that would lead him and his young family to Canajoharie, and eventually, Cooperstown, NY.  On September 28, 1968, Jack married Gayle, and they came to live, with their children, on Nelson Ave in Cooperstown. After a brief stint in Highlands, NJ, they returned to Cooperstown in 1973 and settled at their home on Pine Boulevard. From there, he spent many years as plant manager in the gum and candy division of Beech-Nut and retired in 1987, having risen to VP of Operation for Planters-LifeSavers. It became apparent that he was not yet ready for full-time golf and so ran his own consulting firm until retiring, again, in 1993. It is sometimes reported that he was the maintenance man at Overlook Bed & Breakfast, but those claims can neither be confirmed nor denied.

An avid golfer, Jack enjoyed playing at the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown, some of his favorite foursomes throughout the years included, among many, Paul Lambert, Ted Trossett, Howie Ryan, Frank Maloney, and Fr. John Sise. Somewhere over the years - between rounds on all 19 holes – he found time to serve as president of the Canajoharie Golf Course and chairman of the greens committee at Leatherstocking. He was also an avid reader and a master of crossword puzzles – pastimes carried on by his family. And he was a sports supporter fan. He fondly, and often, recalled playing ice hockey at Madison Square Garden and was known to wager a coin or two on football games with Duke Mayhew and other friends.

Jack was a member and past president of The Mohican Club, a member of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 579 and member and past president of The Fort Rensselaer Club in Canajoharie.

Jack and Gayle could often be found enjoying meals around town as well as having fun times at the Cooperstown Veterans’ Club. In recent times, they also enjoyed daily drives together through the surrounding countryside, and on the afternoon of his passing they took one final ride around Otsego Lake together.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Gayle, of Cooperstown; children - Abbie, Amy, Emily, Sean, Norton (Kimberly Batarse) and Veronica (and Jeffrey Harris); 11 grandchildren - Philip, Ellen, Scott (Sonya), Whitney, Allyson, Zachary, Riley, Madison, Ryan, Natalka, and James; five great grandchildren - Evelyn & Maximillian, Lucille, and Cora & Sullivan; his dear sister, Vera Quigley of Cooperstown; and many, many cherished nieces and nephews. He is further survived by in-laws, Gary (Helen) Shults of Canajoharie, Manly (Karen) Shults of Delhi, Sondra Failing of Fort Plain, and their families.

In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by one son, Jeffrey; siblings and their spouses: Arthur (Sue), Norton (Joan), Warren (Marguerite), James (Viola), Robert (Dottie), Mary Buckley (David), and Madeline Moss (Al); brother-in-law Robert Quigley.

Franklin Russell Smith

On February 8, 2026, surrounded by the warmth and love of the family he spent a lifetime building, Franklin Russell Smith (“Russ”) passed away at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown. He was 89 years old.

Born on April 18, 1936, at the very same hospital where he would later say goodbye, Russ was the son of F. Edward and Ethel Smith. A proud lifelong resident of Cooperstown, he grew up on Leatherstocking Street and graduated with the Cooperstown Central School Class of ’54. Following graduation, Russ answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army, earning an honorable discharge in 1957.

For many in Cooperstown, Russ was known as “Your Friendly Garbologist,” as seen on the vehicles of R & B Smith Trucking, the business Russ began soon after his discharge from the army. His career as the local garbage man began almost by accident. Always ready to serve others, he stepped in to help a friend struggling with trash removal, and with his reputation for reliability and hard work, he soon had a growing number of customers. R & B Smith Trucking remains the family business, now known as Russ Smith Disposals.

Russ didn't know the meaning of “idle.” In addition to his business, he drove the school bus for 53 years, cared for the coal boilers at the high school, and provided night janitorial services for the Cooperstown school district. He was truly a staple of the community, a man who worked with his hands and led with his heart. He was often seen exchanging stories at the Cooperstown Diner or the Peppermill restaurant.

In 1958, on their shared birthday, Russ married Betty Jane Hecox. They settled in Toddsville, where they built their home and raised their four children. Russ was a legendary practical joker; in the Smith household, if he was picking on you, it was the surest sign that he loved you. When he wasn't working, Russ found joy in the simple things: tinkering with old cars, his trucks and tractors, or patrolling the grounds on his golf cart. Most of all, he loved tending to “Betty’s farm.”

Russ built a life out of serving the people of Cooperstown. That spirit of service lives on in his family. The Smith family remains a symbol of the helpfulness and “hard-work-first” nature that Russ championed every day of his life. He will be remembered as the cornerstone of his large, vibrant family.

Russ is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Betty; his brother Richard (Jean) Smith; his children Russell Smith (Cindy Bissell), Roger (Dorothy) Smith, his “favorite daughter” and dedicated caregiver Barbara “Barbie” Smith, and Richard (Jennifer) Smith.

His legacy continues through his seven grandchildren: Jacob (Brittany), William (Madison), Benjamin, Roger (Kaitlyn), Russell, Megen (Gideon), and Kelly; his four great-grandchildren: Eli, Shay, Evie, and Sadie; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ed and Ethel Smith; his in-laws, Arrie and Lillian Hecox; and Barbie’s longtime partner, Ken Parker.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, March 7, 2026, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Community Bible Chapel, 577 Greenough Road, Cooperstown, followed by a brief service. Burial will take place in the spring, with a remembrance celebration to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for you to raise your glass to Russ – preferably a drink with vodka and orange juice.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
