FLY CREEK - Carl Roemer, 99, of Fly Creek, went to his final rest late Thursday afternoon, October 31, 2013, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.
He was born January 16, 1914, in Long Island City in Queens County, a son of Minnie (Scharfenberger) and Johann Roemer.
Raised on Long Island, Carl graduated with the Class of 1927 from East Islip High School.
A veteran of World War II, Carl entered into active service with the United States Navy in August of 1943, and proudly served his country in the Pacific Theater with the 11th Naval Construction Battalion, also known as the Seabees. He received his Honorable Discharge from the military on November 18, 1945, having attained the rank of Motor Machinist's Mate Second Class.
A skilled machinist, Carl worked, from the time he graduated high school until his retirement, as a tool and die maker in the machine trade on Long Island. He retired from Maxson, a missile guidance systems manufacturer, in Great River, Long Island.
Carl was first married to the former Anna Marie Meinke in a ceremony held in August of 1947 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Islip, Long Island. Retiring to Fly Creek in 1968, Carl and Anna enjoyed camping and traveling extensively throughout the United States. Anna passed away on April 27, 1993.
Carl later met Inge Bondiek Otten, and they were united in marriage on August 2, 1998, at the Sand Hill United Methodist Church in Unadilla. They traveled together throughout their fifteen year marriage, making several trips to Europe and along the Eastern Seaboard.
An active member of his community, Carl was a well-respected member of the Fly Creek Area Historical Society. In 1999, Carl, along with Jim Wolff, was instrumental in purchasing the former Fly Creek Grange Hall, thereby providing a permanent home for the organization. In 2006, Carl and Inge further extended their devotion to the organization by providing half the needed funds to enable a new roof to be installed on the Grange Hall. His generosity extended to other local organizations, including numerous donations to Bassett Healthcare Network and the Fly Creek United Methodist Church.
Carl Leaves behind his wife, Inge Otten Roemer, of Fly Creek, as well as step-children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
