Doris L. Beers

1929 - 2019

MILFORD – Doris L. Beers, 89, of Milford’s Hinman Hollow area, passed away peacefully January 3, 2019, at Cooperstown Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing. 

The daughter of Warren H. and Janette (Augur) Lyon, Doris was born June 4, 1929, in Oneonta. She attended the Oneonta schools until 1946 when her family moved to the family farm in Hinman Hollow where she would graduate from Milford Central School in 1947. 

Doris married Earl J. Beers at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartwick Seminary on October 18, 1947. He predeceased her on January 26, 2015.

A life-long area resident, Doris was a life member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartwick Seminary and member of the LCW of the church. She was an active member of the Hinman Hollow Grange and was also active in the activities of the Tianderah Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) in Gilbertsville.  She was also a 4-H leader and involved with the Hartwick Historical Society.

Doris worked for the Hartwick Grade School as secretary and Cooperstown Elementary School as an assistant librarian. She later worked for the New York State Historical Association at The Fenimore House and The Farmers’ Museum. 

Doris enjoyed family camping trips in the Adirondacks. She and Earl also enjoyed the many trips to California and North Carolina to visit family and friends. She was an avid sewer and quilter, and she and Earl enjoyed square dancing with the Doubleday Square Dancers of Cooperstown.

Doris is survived by two sons, David and wife Alicia of San Diego, CA and Bradley and wife Gloria of Mt. Vision; two daughters, Debra Hildenbrand of Hinman Hollow and Greenville, NC and Pamela and husband Wayne of Laurens; and a sister, Marion Albanese of Castleton. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband she was also predeceased by her brothers, William Lyon and Douglas and wife Irene Lyon.

Funeral services and burial will take place later this spring at the convenience of the family.
