Ernest W. Chase

1919 - 2018

COOPERSTOWN – Ernest Wilson Chase, 98, a native of Cooperstown, passed away Friday night, June 1, 2018, at Dogwood Forest Assisted Living Community in Acworth, Georgia. 

Born December 13, 1919, in Cooperstown, Ernest was one of three sons of Earl Campbell and Lulu Belle (Wilson) Chase. Raised on the family dairy farm in Whig Corners, he graduated from Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1937.

On June 29, 1946, Ernest married the former Clara O. Parshall in a ceremony at the bride’s home in the Town of Middlefield. They enjoyed 49 years of marriage until her passing on May 22, 1996. 

For many years Ernest, along with his brother John, owned and operated Earl C. Chase and Sons farm machinery dealership in Cooperstown founded by their father. It was located in the building south of the village now occupied by Church & Scott.

A faithful and devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, Ernest was also a member and past President of several well-known Cooperstown organizations, including the Mohican Club, the Native Sons of Cooperstown, Wedocandors Hunting Club and for several years was an active instructor in the local 4H Club. He was also a life member of the Lions Club of Cooperstown, of which he was the last remaining Charter Member who had maintained his membership since the local Club’s founding in 1951. 

He is survived by his son, Stephen E. Chase and wife Barbara of Acworth, Georgia; three grandchildren, Erica A. Nel and husband Jaco of Dallas, Georgia, Ashley R. Jackson and husband Brad of Kennesaw, Georgia, and Charles E. Chase & wife, Stephanie of Dallas, Georgia; four great grandchildren, Zion, Sage and Noah Nel of Dallas, Georgia and Edison Jackson of Kennesaw, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his two brothers, Lewis E. Chase who died November 6, 1973, and John D. Chase who died June 6, 2005.
Ernest’s family will receive family and friends from 2-3 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2018, at the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, with a Funeral Service being offered at 3 p.m., the Rev. Joseph Perdue, pastor, officiating.

Interment will follow in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, 19 Elm Street, Cooperstown, NY 13326.
