Elizabeth Jane Hathaway McManus

April 11, 1933 - April 27, 2013

FLY CREEK - Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Hathaway McManus, age 80, passed away Saturday morning, April 27, 2013, at Otsego Manor.

She was born April 11, 1933, in Hoosick Falls, a daughter of William and Ethel (Mattison) Hathaway. After graduating from high school, she attended and later graduated from the State University Teachers College at Oneonta.

It was while she was attending college that she met Harry Noel McManus, and the two were united in marriage on April 12, 1952, in a ceremony at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown.

Elizabeth truly loved and enjoyed teaching. She first taught full time in Delhi, but later moved to Fly Creek and substituted at schools in Cooperstown, Milford, Van Hornesville, and Richfield Springs. She also was employed as a Sales Tax Agent for the State of New York.

Devoted to her family, she will be fondly remembered for always being available to "pick up the slack" where needed, and was always ready to do whatever needed to be done. She also had a love for the natural world, and enjoyed bird watching, beekeeping, animals, as well as gardening.

She was a long-time devoted member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, and was also a member of the Otsego-Hartwick-Arbutus Chapter No. 201, Order of the Eastern Star in Cooperstown.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband of 61 years, Harry N. McManus, of Fly Creek; one daughter Carol E. McManus of Milford; one son and daughter-in-law, Neal and Gail McManus of Cooperstown; three grandchildren, Jonathan McManus and his wife, Rebecca, Michael McManus and Shannon McManus; two great grandchildren, Sawyer and Parker; two half brothers, Marvin Hathaway of Bennington, Vermont and Chic Thurber of Hoosick Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be offered at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2013, at the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kurt Funke, pastor of Gilberstville Baptist Church, officiating.

As part of the services at the church on Sunday afternoon, an Eastern Star Memorial Service will be conducted for Sister McManus by members of the Otsego-Hartwick-Arbutus Chapter No. 201, Order of the Eastern Star.

The McManus family respectfully requests that flowers not be sent. As an alternative, please consider a memorial donation to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY  10018, or a local humane society.

The McManus family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to everyone at Otsego Manor for the kind, considerate and understanding care provided during Elizabeth's stay in their facility.
