Joseph W. Langan

September 12, 1918 - August 17, 2013

COOPERSTOWN - Mr. Joseph William Langan, 94, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, August 17, 2013, at Otsego Manor while receiving the Last Rites of the Roman Catholic Church.

He was born at home in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn on September 12, 1918, the youngest of nine children of Peter and Anne (Cahill) Langan. Raised and educated in Brooklyn, he was a graduate of Pratt Institute.

First employed by an engineering firm in New Jersey, Joseph served with the United States Merchant Marine during World War II, and was later employed as an engineer by the State of New York with the Office of General Services. Upon his retirement he moved from Albany to Roseboom, where he served for a time as the caretaker at Belvedere Lake and as Town Assessor. In 2007, Joseph became a resident of the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown, and made his home there until moving to Otsego Manor in June of this year.  

Joseph is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Madeline Langan of Tully; two grandsons, Thomas A. Langan and Kevin E. Langan and his wife, Jennifer; one great grandson, Joseph Edward Langan; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Helen Maloney whom he married on September 14, 1946, at Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn.  Helen died February 10, 1981.  On November 12, 1983, Joseph married Vivian Wilson Young, who died December 10, 2006.

Joseph was also predeceased by one son, Donald J. Langan, who died February 2, 1992, and all of his siblings.

Friends may call and pay their respects at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut Street, Cooperstown, on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, from 4-6 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. Scott VanDerveer, Associate Pastor at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, officiating.

The Service of Committal will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 22, 2013, in the Interment Chapel at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY  13820.
