1932 - 2017
OAKSVILLE - Edwin W. Thorne, 84, of Oaksville, passed away late Friday afternoon, July 7, 2017, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Cooperstown September 25, 1932, a son of Loren E. and C. Emergene (Thayer) Thorne, and graduated with the Class of 1951 from Cooperstown High School.
On October 10, 1953, Ed married Joyce Marie Cross in a ceremony at the Cooperstown Methodist Church.
For 37 1/2 years he was employed by the Otsego County Forestry Department and was involved with building several County parks, including the one at Copes Corners. At the time of his retirement he held the position of Parks Foreman.
Actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years, Ed served as a Leader of Troop 7 and for 22 years was District Camping Chairman. A true outdoorsman, he loved camping with his family, hunting and fishing, and was a member of the Oneonta Pistol Team. He was also a Life Member of the Fly Creek Area Historical Society and was noted for his pancakes at breakfasts sponsored by the Society. An avid woodworker, Ed could repair almost anything. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Ed is survived by his loving wife and best friend for 64 years, Judy Thorne of Oaksville; two sons, Edwin W. Thorne, Jr. and wife, Patricia of Sidney and Thomas L. Thorne and wife, Susan of Cortland; one daughter, Lori Jean Scorzelli and husband, George of Warnerville; six grandchildren, Crystal Hurn of Cobleskill, Jessica Thorne of Woodside, Tamara Freed of McGraw, and Katrina, Matthew and Benjamin Thorne of Cortland; nine great grandchildren, Victoria, Karissa, Lucas, Spencer, Harpyr, Makayla, Kristabella, Desmond and Serenity; two brothers, Ralph Thorne and wife, Delores of Franklin Square and Marshall Thorne and wife, Sandra of Cooperstown; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by one grandson, Shawn A. Hurn, who died January 7, 2015.
Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut Street, Cooperstown, on Wednesday morning, July 12, 2017, beginning at 10 a.m.
A Funeral Service will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Funeral Home with Ed's good friend Jim Atwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery on Cemetery Road in Fly Creek.
