Lindsay Macarthur, Jr.

1929 - 2017

COOPERSTOWN - Lindsay Macarthur, Jr., 87, of Venice, FL and Cooperstown, NY, died Thursday afternoon, July 6, 2017, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown with his family by his side.

Lindsay was born November 15, 1929, in New York City, son of Lindsay and Alice née Smith Macarthur, Sr. He grew up in Mahwah, NJ and attended Ramsey High School. 

After graduating with the Class of 1952 from Bowdoin College with a bachelor's degree in economics, Lindsay went to work for Hanover Trust Company in New York City. After only a few weeks of employment, Lindsay entered into active service with the United States Marine Corps on September 20, 1952, and proudly served his country during the Korean War. 

Upon receiving his honorable discharge from the military on August 16, 1954, Lindsay returned to Hanover Trust Company. Following a successful career in the banking industry, he retired from Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company as an Executive Vice President in June1992. 

One of Lindsay's favorite pastimes was playing Bridge, and it was while doing so that he met his future wife, Warrene S. Nichols. Lindsay and Lennie were united in marriage on February 22, 1969, in the Chapel at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Ridgewood, NJ, and they settled in Ho-Ho-Kus. Since 1992 Lindsay and Lennie divided their time between homes in Venice, FL and Cooperstown, NY. 

In addition to Bridge, Lindsay's greatest joys in life were his family, tennis and golf. He was a member of the Cooperstown Country Club, enjoyed playing golf at the Leatherstocking Golf Course, and was a member of the Mission Valley Golf and Country Club in Nokomis, Florida. A member of the Venice Presbyterian Church in Venice, FL he was also an ardent participant and supporter of Habitat for Humanity. 

Lindsay is survived by his wife of 48 years, Lennie Macarthur of Venice, FL and Cooperstown, NY; four children, Anne M. Booth and husband, Thomas of Winston-Salem, NC, Jennifer M. Davis and husband, Louis D. "Tripp" Davis III of Abington, PA, David P. Nichols and wife, Louise Reid Boyce Nichols of Wilmington, DE, and Peter L. Macarthur of Dobbs Ferry, NY; four grandchildren, Owen P. Davis (Midshipman, 3C USNA), Gwenyth A. Davis, Eliza Campbell Nichols and William H.W. Nichols; and several nieces. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Macarthur Stewart. 

The Macarthur Family will receive friends Saturday, July 15, 2017, from 4-6 p.m. at their home at 166 Stockingbrook Road in Pierstown for a time of remembrance, fellowship and refreshment.
